Past Modern is a contemporary Indian brand rooted in culture and craftsmanship, reinterpreted through modern design for a global audience. We draw inspiration from India’s rich visual language—its textiles, techniques, and traditions. For us, heritage is not something to preserve behind a glass; it’s something to live in, evolve with, and wear every day.

A desire to wear Indian craft—reimagined for a modern lifestyle.

Self-taught in pattern making, design, and stitching.

Past Modern launched in 2024 with a debut collection inspired by Indian modern artist Raza—soulful colour, reworked through adda embroidery.

Collaborated with hand block printers to reinterpret the work of Zarina—creating our first bestseller.

Hand-embellished the everyday tank top—and it broke the internet.

Expanded to North America in August 2025.

Reintroduced Y2K fashion through hand-beaded tops and scarves.

And this is only the beginning.

THE PAST MODERN STORY

The idea began while Shivang studied economics in the US.

WHY PAST MODERN

Past Modern began with a simple observation: while India is home to some of the world’s most skilled craftsmanship, truly modern Indian brands with a global outlook are still rare. I started Past Modern to bridge this gap - to create clothing that respects where it comes from, yet feels completely at home in the present. The name reflects this philosophy. We don’t believe in choosing between tradition and progress. Instead, we build an identity that draws from the past while speaking clearly to the present; creating pieces that feel rooted, relevant, and enduring.Past Modern is not about looking back. It’s about moving forward—without forgetting where we come from.
