Past Modern is a synthesis of India’s rich, cultural history and traditions, and the unknown beauty of what lies ahead expressed through design.
“To be modern is not a fashion, it is a state. It is necessary to understand history, and he who understands history knows how to find continuity between that which was, that which is, and that what will be” - Le Corbusier on the definition of ‘modern’
India’s history is unique. Despite numerous invasions and colonizations, it has managed to maintain a sense of continuity in its culture while absorbing aspects of other cultures and allowing them to be superimposed onto its own like layers of tracing paper.
Ever since independence, India has been searching for a renewed sense of national identity. Modern India is attempting to find novel ways to combine its heritage with western values without having to distort its rich cultural identity.
Past Modern’s intention is to craft an expression that is thoroughly modern and thoroughly Indian. The intent is to celebrate our past, revitalize our craft traditions, use our understanding of colors and its impact on psychological moods, and to place them in a modern context for a global customer.
Our founder Shivang Chandna draws inspiration from artists like Amrita Sher-Gil, S.H. Raza, Charles Correa who masterfully forged their dual identities and crafted a unique expression that was both Indian and modern.
