The muse of our expression, Amrita Sher-Gil, was a pioneer of modern Indian art and is often credited as the greatest avant-garde women artists of the early 20th century. The youngest member, and only Asian ever, to be awarded the gold medal by the Grand Salon. She was quoted, “I can only paint in India. Europe belongs to Picasso, Matisse, Braque. India belongs only to me.” She devoted her life to depicting Indian subjects by blending traditional and western art forms and is a National Treasure.
